Training on the Ground

Training horses in hand is essential for safety and for preparation for ridden skills. If there is a problem on the ground with, for example, pushy horses with no awareness of personal space, scared of noise, narrow places, backing up, walking too slowly etc and so forth, then it will affect your ridden work.

Training on the ground is not only essential, but can be very stimulating for both horse and human.  What a great way to exercise, especially if you are short of time and cannot ride.

Nothing like getting imaginative and pulling out some old tarpaulin and seeing if he can walk over it, or setting up some poles on the ground and see if he can walk over them, through them, backwards through an L shape or piled up on a drum at different angles so he has to think about height and distance. You can go under, over and through a variety of obstacles to work and stimulate your horse and to help improve confidence.

Great tool for concentration and fabulous for a horse who is getting a little old and arthritic, or an un-backed youngster or a horse coming back into work after an injury.

Training on the ground can prepare your horse for:

  • Safe and easy leading & handling
  • Showing in hand
  • Lunging and longe reining
  • Trailer Loading
  • Cross Country Fences
  • Le Trec Obstacles
  • Lateral moves
  • Horses coming back into light work
  • As well as the all-important walk halt and halt rein-back transition

So many benefits, no wonder the great masters have always done it!!!
